1. Dutch Influenced City Center

The city center is a treasure trove of beautiful colonial buildings that harken back to the Dutch era of which Tugu Malang is a symbol. Some of the best examples of this heritage can be found on Jalan Ijen Boulevard, a tree-lined boulevard flanked by impressive colonial-era buildings.
To add to the European feeling, you will find spacious and picturesque parks located at the heart of the city such as the Alun Alun Park. Contrary to most parks in other Javanese cities, it is fully open to the public and constitutes a vibrant gathering place for both locals and visitors, where events and markets often take place.
2. Colourful Neighbourhoods
Malang's neighborhoods have taken on a new life with the introduction of vibrant art projects. These neighborhoods are more than just picturesque spots; they are the result of community efforts to revitalize their surroundings, creating a sense of pride and unity among the residents. Day Trips from Malang
1. Mount Bromo
The highlight of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is within a 2-hour drive from Malang. Those who make the journey to Mount Bromo are greeted by a vast, ash-filled caldera that stretches as far as the eye can see. In the center of this lunar-like landscape lies the active Bromo crater, emitting wisps of smoke. While most tourists flock to Mount Bromo to witness the mesmerizing sunrise, this destination has a lot more to offer. From the thrill of a 4x4 ride on an ash desert to a picnic in the lush greenery of the gentle undulating Teletubbies hills, Mount Bromo has something to offer to all types of travelers.
2. Tumpak Sewu
Located approximately 2.5 hours away from Malang in East Java, Tumpak Sewu captivates visitors with its breathtaking beauty. Towering at 120 meters, Tumpak Sewu boasts a magnificent curtain of water plunging into a lush green canyon, surrounded by vibrant foliage and serene natural pools. Where to eat in Malang
Malang is renowned for its culinary delights, offering a wide range of dishes that cater to various tastes. You'll find everything from traditional Indonesian restaurants to street food and international cuisine.
Jalan Ijen Boulevard is home to charming Dutch colonial-style cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal while soaking in the historical atmosphere. Don't miss the opportunity to also explore the local street food scene, you'll find vendors offering everything from fried snacks to traditional sweets.
Unfortunately, we do not have many photos of the restaurants we have been but Malang definitely offered some of the greatest dinners we had in Java. On the list of are favourites are:
Bakso President: Known for its mouthwatering bakso, this is a must-visit place for meatball soup lovers.
SaigonSan Restaurant & Rooftop: For a change of taste, SaigonSan offers a delightful blend of Vietnamese and Thai cuisine with a rooftop dining experience.
Melati Restaurant: Malang’s favorite, known for its diverse menu of Indonesian and Dutch cuisines served in a charming and inviting ambiance, filled with traditional puppets and tropical plants.

How to get to Malang
Malang is conveniently located in East Java, Indonesia, and is accessible by various modes of transportation. Depending on your starting point, you can choose the most suitable option for your journey.
By Air:
If you're traveling from within Indonesia or internationally, the nearest airport to Malang is the Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG). It offers domestic flights from major Indonesian cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali. Upon arrival, you can easily reach the city center by taxi or airport shuttle. By Train:
Surabaya, a major city in East Java, is well-connected to Malang by train. You can take the Jayabaya train from Surabaya Gubeng Station to Malang Station. This route typically has a 2-hour duration and only costs 40000IDR (about 2.5€).
We catch the Malabar train from Yogyakarta to Malang. This journey takes 6h20 but it is a great way to experience the picturesque landscapes of Java. It costs about 250000IDR (about 15€) and train tickets can be easily booked through 12Go.
By Car:
If you prefer flexibility and have access to a car, you can drive to Malang. Major highways, such as the Surabaya-Malang Toll Road, connect Malang to Surabaya and other nearby cities. However, make sure that your driver's license is accepted in Indonesia and be prepared for traffic and the chaos that is driving in Indonesia. Unless you are used to driving there, I would not recommend this option.
Best time to visit Malang
The enchanting city of Malang beckons travelers year-round however, the best time to visit largely depends on your preferences and what you want to experience.
Dry Season (July to September):
Malang's dry season extends from July to September and is considered the best time for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The weather is typically warm but drier, making it more suitable for exploring the city's historic sites and the natural attractions nearby. Many cultural festivals and events take place during this period, offering a chance to immerse yourself in Javanese traditions and celebrations. Rainy Season (November to May):
The rainy season in Malang brings frequent showers, resulting in lush green landscapes. If you enjoy the sight of vibrant vegetation and wish to witness the region's natural beauty at its peak, this could be an appealing time to visit. Additionally, there are fewer tourists compared to the dry season and you may find cheapest and less crowded accommodations and attractions, allowing for a more tranquil experience.

Cities in Indonesia are not walking-friendly and public transportation is scarce. To travel around the cities we usually use Grab. Grab is a taxi app that allows you to get a ride from your phone, knowing exactly how much you will pay in advance. This was always a fast, convenient, and secure option that we highly recommend.
You may be requested to take photos, especially if you're not yet featured in their Pokédex (joke). Indonesians are known for their politeness, so they'll always seek your permission first before taking a photo with you. It's a cultural gesture, so embrace it and reciprocate by asking for a photo with them as well. This way, everyone creates lasting memories!
Don't overlook the use of spices in your meals, especially with street food. Spices not only enhance flavor but also serve as a safeguard against harmful bacteria, particularly in countries with hot and humid climates.
Is it worth visiting Malang
